Do it now… but also don’t do it all

Happy New Year!

We can finally say goodbye to the dreadful year that was 2020 and hope that 2021 will be the year when the world, wiser and humbled, charges forward into a prosperous future.

Around the world, the 2020 New Year’s Eve celebrations were muted with traditional fireworks displays and/or gatherings cancelled in many cities such as Singapore, Hong Kong, London and New York. Sydney, which debated the appropriateness of having a fireworks display as deadly wildfires ravaged Australia last year, did not disappoint with another spectacular show which has always been my favourite.

I visited Sydney for the first time in August 2018 and stayed at the Shangri-La Sydney which has an amazing view of the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge. I vowed to return for New Year’s Eve in 2019 but postponed the trip because of the uncertainty about whether the celebrations would proceed. A missed opportunity.

We pass on opportunities because we always assume there will be another chance and that our time on earth is infinite. 2020 has reminded us of the importance of living in the present and doing things now. For tomorrow is not certain.

In the spirit of ‘do it now’, I have decided not to make any new year’s resolutions for 2021. I just want to live in the moment, make the most of what I have and enjoy life.

Enjoying life doesn’t mean the absence of goals and aspirations. I will continue to build the Ongolo brand into a credible blog and plan to write my first script. My lack of traditional new year’s resolutions is simply down to the fact that I want ‘living my best life’ to be the overarching theme, with or without the extra lbs.

I would also like to read more in 2021. Since Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook know us so well, it is hardly surprising that this Self Growth Plan keeps popping up in my Facebook feed.  I quite like the recommendations and already have  17 of the books listed below. Rather than read bite-sized summaries, I'll read as many of these books as I can. If Bill Gates can read 50 books per year, mere mortals should aspire to do more.

I have also decided not to do it all. 2020 was a mentally, physically and emotionally draining year. I did too much and gave too much of myself. I will have to do things differently in 2021 starting with getting contributors to help me create content for Ongolo, not taking on any new initiatives and getting at least 7 hours of sleep each night. Taking a step back is a hard adjustment for a busy bee but one that is necessary.

What are your plans for 2021?

Whatever they may be, I wish you well.
