Drogba returned to his uncle in France in 1989. He joined a youth football team in Dunkerque, playing in the position of centre-back before shifting to centre-forward at his uncle’s behest. His parents moved to France when he was 13, which must have been a relief for young Drogba. 

He played for various youth teams before earning his first professional contract with the club Le Mans in 1998. His dream to become a professional football player had finally come true.
